The recent MRS Operations Network event was a true testament to the vibrancy and diversity of market research operations.

It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout, with professionals from all corners of the industry coming together to share insights, discuss challenges, and offer new ideas. From interviewing and support services to fieldwork, data management, survey scripting, HR, project management, and self-serve platforms, the breadth of expertise in the room was remarkable. If I’ve missed anyone, I apologise - it’s simply a reflection of how wide-ranging and essential the field of market research operations truly is.

This diversity is precisely why the MRS is making a concerted effort to reinvigorate the Operations Network. Ensuring that all facets of the industry are heard and represented is a key objective moving forward, and the event provided a fantastic platform to kickstart these conversations.

A Rousing Introduction from MRS CEO Jane Frost

The afternoon opened with an engaging and entertaining introduction from MRS CEO Jane Frost. As always, Jane brought her signature wit and energy to the stage, making sure that no one—herself included—was safe from her sharp humour. More importantly, she spoke passionately about the significance of operations in market research and the need to celebrate those who are shaping and driving innovation within the field.

Jane outlined some of the recent changes made to the Ops Network and offered a glimpse into what’s in store for the rest of the year. Her commitment to strengthening this community were clear, setting an optimistic and forward-looking tone for the rest of the event.

A Room Full of Ideas and Energy

Following Jane’s introduction, attendees participated in an open discussion, focused on what they wanted to gain from the Operations Network moving forward. The enthusiasm in the room was palpable, with an impressive range of ideas and suggestions pouring in. From best practice sharing and professional development to collaborative problem-solving and networking opportunities, it was clear that there is a strong appetite for a more connected and engaged operations community.

The conversation was so dynamic that it could have continued for hours - the MRS team now has a wealth of ideas to consider, and it will be exciting to see how these discussions could translate into actionable initiatives in the coming months.

Insights from Industry Leaders

The event also featured inspiring talks from two well-respected leaders in the operations world.

First, we heard from Simon Glanville of Ronin International, a B2B specialist research agency. Simon took us through Ronin’s evolution, detailing his own journey from General Manager to UK Managing Director. His insights into the company’s growth and transformation over the years provided a fascinating look at how leadership, strategy, and adaptability are critical to success in market research operations, but that ultimately theirs is a people business – both those working for them and taking participants in their projects.

Next, James Turner (JT) took the stage with an energetic and engaging account of his career trajectory. From his time as Head of Research at BT to roles in client development, research, and board directorship at ICM and COO at Edelman, JT’s journey has been one of continuous learning and strategic leadership. He is now founder and CEO at Delineate, a company proudly based in Wales, and he shared valuable lessons on innovation, agility, and the importance of operational excellence in delivering impactful in-the-moment research.

Networking, Drinks, and Looking Ahead

Of course, no MRS event would be complete without an opportunity to connect, and the afternoon ended on a high note with drinks, snacks, and plenty of lively conversation. True to the spirit of the Operations Network, this was a chance to reconnect with old colleagues, make new contacts, and continue the day’s discussions in a more informal setting.

As we look ahead, it’s clear that the Ops Network is entering an exciting new phase. With renewed energy, a strong sense of community, and a commitment to innovation, the future of market research operations is bright. Here’s to the next gathering and the many more to come!
